Illusion magazine issue 1 was published in 2006 – the brain child of two keen UK face painters, Claire Pick and Julie Oliver who recognised that the face and body painting scene needed a dedicated magazine to promote and showcase the talented artists emerging from all over the globe. Self published, the first issue of the magazine was an immediate success, although the publishers quickly realised that if they wanted to move the magazine forward in terms of design they needed to look to outsourcing the production, so that they could concentrate on what they do best – painting fantastic designs and bringing new talent to a wider audience.
And so it was that Lunatrix Design came on board to design and layout the magazine from issue 2 back in 2007. We established a set of page templates and graphic elements to give the magazine its own voice. The magazine masthead logo was given a new look after about a dozen issues which gives it a real wow factor from some distance on the shelf. Now a quarterly with 4 seasonal issues a year, the magazine is looking absolutely incredible, even if we do say so ourselves! The mix of beginner step-by-step tutorials through to professional techniques and artist interviews makes the magazine one of our favourite regular design projects and the latest issue is looking to be the best yet. Alongside the regular magazine which is now approaching issue 30, we have designed various face painting books, event flyers and programmes as shown in the examples underneath.
